Foundations of Practical Short Range Radio Class and Lodging

$31.80 – $63.60The first in a family-friendly series of courses at BF aimed at enhancing community knowledge in short, medium and long-range radio. Whether your use case is a first set of family radios for off-grid hiking and camping, increasing your neighborhood or community’s ability to respond to disasters, or surving and thriving in the zombie apocalypse, this radio series is for you. We aim to meet the audience where they are, whether you are considering radio for the first time or you are an accomplished HAM, corporate or LEO/MIL commo who wants to apply your skills in new ways to connect and support your local and distant communities. This not a “HAM Prep” course though some topics contain some foundational HAM knowledge.
Course is being offered at a discount for its first-time offering.
TOPICS AREAS: “Foundations of Practical Short Range Radio”
- Contexts for short range radio use, and why should you care
- Typical gear and setups for various contexts
- Intro to radio programming
- Some considerations and concerns with radio in the community
- Extended information as time permits
Class is $60 per person including a pizza lunch on Saturday.
Course material will be classroom-based in the BF training facility, starting at 9am and running to roughly 5pm. A refrigerator and microwave is available if bringing your own snacks. A pizza lunch will be provided on Saturday. Dinner after the course is up to the participants, but we can enjoy a local restaurant together on Saturday night and return to the facility for futher conversation, video or checking out gear.
Lodging is available at BFR any of Friday, Saturday or Sunday nights. The instructor will stay on premise as well for continued opportunity to discuss the class or related topics. Lodging is $60 per night, plus a once-per-stay $30 cleaning fee per person.
The Sunday following class is a range day at BF for the “Greyman Network” folks, and radio class attendees are welcome to participate at the reduced rate of $30 for the range day. Sunday will be open format pistol & rifle shooting and socializing with members of greyman. network and fans of Warrior Poet Society.
As time permits at the Foundations course we can begin to discuss other future course plans and some of those topics as well. Future courses in this series will include medium-range/long-range/
strategic comms and other topics similar to the following: “Advanced and Strategic Radio Topics”

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
The instructor has decades of professional experience as a digital innovator, spanning the globe on land, sea (global vessel tracking) and space (manned and unmanned space programs). His career has covered enterprise, government, military, medical, oil & gas, trading, startups, and more.
He currently works in software development within the mobile and set-top consumer video industry, an industry he first worked in at Apple, and there is a good chance you have “his” software on your phone. With two degrees in Engineering, he is not a formal HAM, but programs the commercial radios for BF operations, and engages in various other related projects. He is deeply interested in supporting and blending radio, shooting, and positive community-building groups in the BFR region and across our country. In his free time he does things like teach this class, supports and participates in various shooting/operator related events, is active on https://greyman.network, is active in church, or hangs out with other long-time fans of Warrior Poet Society.
