DESCRIPTION:Orion Training Group – Small Unit Sustainment – 5 Day \nDate & Time \nThu\, Jun 22 at 8:00 AM – Mon\, Jun 26 at 6:00 PM CST \n  \nDescription \n16 Total Spots \n8 Minimum Required \nTime Commitment: Five 10-12 hour days\, 1-2 days spent in the field. \nCourse Focus: to teach small unit patrolling for the fire team and squad level. Some topics to be covered will be movement techniques and formations\, patrol member duties\, signaling\, and contingency actions. This is not a land navigation class\, though we will briefly cover some topics on the subject. The class is not meant to be arduous in nature\, however students will be under load and moving for up to 8 hours at a time for unknown distances. The bulk of the class will be held outdoors\, and training will be conducted regardless of rain or shine\, heat or cold\, with an exception to extreme weather conditions (hurricane\, tornado\, brush fire\, flood\, blizzard). You will spend 1 or 2 nights SLEEPING in the field. The primary instructor will reach out 4 weeks and 2 weeks prior to all students via email for updates to weather and reminders about the packing list. \nPacking list: \nItems On The Body: \n\nPants and long sleeve shirt\, durable enough to withstand breaking through brush and briars. Bring 2 sets\, minimum.\nSocks\, calf high recommended. Pack at least one pair per day\, two pairs per day recommended.\nShoes/ boots\, durable with good tread\nUnderwear (optional)\nUndershirt (optional)\, moisture wicking and quick drying recommended.\nGaiters (optional)\n\nHeadgear: \n\nBall cap\, bush cover\, or military soft cover. Needs to be camouflage or solid color such as olive drab\, tan\, or black.\nHelmet or head mount (if you have night vision). Helmets are recommended for anyone who wears them for duty\, but overall optional. We will do some night work\, and it’s an opportunity for those with night vision to practice on it.\n\nFighting Load: \n\nPlate carrier\, chest rig\, or load bearing platform with:\n6 rifle magazines\n1 quart of water\nIFAK\nIf you run anything else on your kit for duty\, have that with you.\n\nBackpack/ Rucksack\, capable of holding 48 hours worth of supplies: \n\n4 quarts of water (minimum)\n6 meals (MRE\, dehydrated rations\, trail mix\, etc)\n1 set of your spare clothes\n1 Tarp or camouflage poncho\n1 Poncho liner (or similar)\n1 beanie and light\, mid layer top\nLight rain jacket\nHeadlamp with red lens filter\n(optional) additional layers you believe you want/ need based on the weather forecast\n(optional) bivy sack and sleeping bag\n(optional) sleeping pad\n\nFieldcraft items: \n\n30ft of 550 cord\nField shovel\nHatchet/ camp axe/ tomahawk\nField knife (5-12″ blade)\nLighter\nStorm matches\nFerrocerium rod & striker\nCamo face paint\nSmall personal camo net\nSignaling kit: orange panel (handkerchief size)\, 2x green glowsticks\nWater purification tablets\nWater filtration system\n\nNavigation equipment (optional but encouraged): \n\nMap (use CalTopo or USGS to order a map of the training site)\nCompass\nGPS\nMap pens or fine point sharpie and eraser pen.\n\nHygiene items (minimum items on body or kit): \n\nLip balm\nSunscreen\nHand sanitizer\nField wipes\nBody powder\nPost ivy contact wipes\nBug repellent\nToothbrush\nBoo boo kit (band aids\, antibacterial ointment)\n\nWeapon System(s): \nCarbine or rifle with sling \n(Optional) Pistol with holster (holster MUST have active retention) \nDisclaimer: the minimum required class size is 8 students. If 8 students are not registered within two weeks\, the class will be cancelled and the registered students will be refunded their tuition. If the minimum class size is reached\, no refunds can be issued. We pay our instructors in advance so your funds will no longer be available.
